Guido NJ Tytgat gained his medical qualification at the University of Louvain in Belgium. Following this, he completed his post-graduate training in gastroenterology and a research fellowship with the Belgian Fund of Scientific Research. He is now a Professor Emeritus of Gastroenterology at the University of Amsterdam, The Netherlands, and a Consultant in Gastroenterology at the Academic Medical Centre in Amsterdam.

The department he helped create at the Academic Medical Centre in Amsterdam is a leading training unit in gastroenterology and world-renowned for diagnostic imaging, therapeutic endoscopy, and basic and clinical research in inflammatory bowel disease, hepatic transport mechanisms, gallstone disease, and pancreatic diseases.

Professor Tytgat is the author or co-author of over 800 research publications and several book chapters, and serves on the editorial boards of several gastroenterology journals. He is currently associate editor of Gastroenterology and Editor-in-Chief of Bailliere’s Clinics in Gastroenterology.

Professor Tytgat is also an Honorary Professor at the Shanghai Second Medical University, at the University of Isai, Romania, and the University of Antwerp, Belgium. He is a member of numerous professional associations, including the American Gastroenterological Association, The Royal Dutch Academy of Science, and the British Society of Gastroenterology. He was President of the World Gastroenterology Organisation from 2002 – 2005.
