Malagelada   Juan-R. Malagelada, M.D.
Graduated from Barcelona Medical School in 1967. Soon after graduation, he emigrated to the United States on a Scholarship from the "Juan March" Foundation. In the United States, he completed his medical training in Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology, first in Boston (Tufts University Program) and from 1971 to 1974 at Mayo Clinic and Mayo Medical School in Rochester, Minnesota. In 1974, he was appointed Consultant in Gastroenterology at Mayo Clinic and achieved in 1981 the rank of Full Professor of Medicine of Mayo Medical School of the University of Minnesota. In 1983, he was appointed Director of Mayo GI Training Program sponsored by the National Institutes of Health. In 1987, he returned to his native Barcelona, Spain, where he is presently Head of the Department of Digestive Diseases and Professor of Digestive Diseases of the Autonomous University of Barcelona. As a researcher, he has focused on the physiology and pathophysiology of the digestive tract, chiefly gut motility and sensitivity, acid-peptic disorders, inflammatory bowel disease, and pancreatic pathology. He is author or co-author of about 600 scientific articles in medical publications as well as multiple scientific communications to medical meetings. He has received several international awards including the Max Siurala Award, the Ewald Prize, the McKenna Lecture, the Torsoli Prize, and the Janssen Award for Lifetime Achievement in Digestive Diseases. His teaching activities have included Lectures and Visiting Professorships in different Universities and Medical Institutions worldwide. He is a member of the Board of several medical societies as well as scientific European and American Journals. He is the past President of the Spanish Society of Digestive Diseases, of the European Association for Gastroenterology and Endoscopy and of the Bockus International Society of Gastroenterology, past Chairman of the Steering Committee of the International Group for Neurogastroenterology and Motility and past Secretary General of the United European Gastroenterology Federation. He is the current President of the United European Gastroenterology Federation.
